In May of 2001, Dick Sugg, pictured, a former Commanding Officer of the 8th/4th Arty, revisited Vietnam. In this photo he is seen standing near the center of the former Camp JJ Carroll.  The mountain in the background over his right shoulder is
Dong Ha Mountain, formerly, Firebase Fuller.

Aerial photograph of Firebase A-2

A-2 was located in Gio Linh District of Quang Tri Province at the Eastern end of the DMZ.

In the top portion of the photo you can see the mouth of the Ben Hai River that ran through the center of the DMZ and a portion of the coastline of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Click here or on the photograph to view an enlarged version and see the many bomb and artillery craters between A-2 and the Ben Hai River.

Photo is courtesy of Carl Moore,  who did target acquisition from the observation tower at A-2 for
C-F-26th Artillery-TAB in 1969-70. He found this pic while surfing the net.  He also believes the pic was taken sometime in 1967 or 1968.

ARVN and NVA meet with a firefight near the beach
south of Quang Tri City  in 1970.
In the late Summer  of 1970, an NVA unit (possibly of Company size), using radio silence, marched almost to the sea before being discovered in a small village south of Quang Tri City and east of Hwy 1.

In this photo, the ARVN CP is approached from the north on Hwy 1.  The NVA unit is in the tree line to the left.

The two dark spots in the sky above the ground smoke are helicopter gun ships softening up the NVA position as ARVN infantry forces advance on the ground in APC's.

Needless to say, the NVA unit was neutralized.  The NVA did prove a point as to how easy it was to get that far under radio silence.
